LeapEd Bright Ideas
VICIOUS VOCABULARY!
Parents: Help your child get a head start in English! Label your home with words!
WHAT YOU NEED:
- A marker or pen
- Dictionary – off or online
- Blank paper strips or cards
- Blu-tack or cello tape
- Paper and pen/pencil
HOW TO PLAY:
- On the blank paper strips or cards, label objects in any room with the English words for it, eg couch, lamp, chair, etc. Stick the labels on the object with the blu-tack or cello tape.
- On a piece of paper, make a list of the words in English, and Malay.
- Ask students to find the English definition of each word using a dictionary (off or online).
- Write the definitions next to the English words on the list.
- Ask the family to join in to play Vicious Vocabulary.
- Take turns and ask each player to translate a Malay word to English and give the definition of it.
- Reward each correct answer and definition with points.
1 point = word; 2 points = definition.
- The one with the most points or rewards wins the game.
- If everyone enjoyed this, continue to do one room per week until your children know the English words for all items in the house.
This activity can be done over 1-3 days, depending on your child’s age and ability. Use any rewards to make it even more fun.
